- 3X rule threshold: graded value should be at least $225 (3 × $75 cost). Not met.
- Net gain vs staying raw: +$75 (graded $200 − raw $50 − cost $75).
Rule of thumb only. Grade sensitivity, authentication needs, and resale liquidity can override the math — high-value coins are often worth grading regardless. Estimate, not financial advice.
How the 3X rule works
Only grade if the expected graded value is at least 3× your total grading cost. The multiple is a safety margin: grades can come back lower than hoped, and you want the upside to absorb that risk. Read the full framework in is my coin worth grading?
Don't know the grade yet?
The calculator needs an estimated graded value, which depends on the grade. Get a free AI grade estimate first, then look up the value at that grade on the PCGS or NGC price guide. See also our coin grading cost guide.
